The country’s personal savings rate in 2006 was a negative one percent, the lowest in 73 years. Though savings is important for individuals and families at all income levels, it is especially critical for helping low to moderate income families, who often have no assets or access to credit. It is crucial for them to have savings to remain financially stable during changes in income precipitated by illness, job loss, or other events.
The Prosperity Campaign recently partnered with America Saves to incorporate Pasco County Saves, a localized campaign to promote saving. America Saves is a national marketing campaign that encourages individuals, particularly low and moderate income, to save money, reduce debt and build wealth. Many believe that low and moderate income families cannot afford to save and build wealth. Yet research shows that there are "savers" and "spenders" in all income classes. Through contributions to a workplace retirement program, home purchase, and other savings methods during their working years, most individuals can accumulate six-figure assets. The goal of the campaign is to convince all Americans that they can build wealth and to assist them to do just that. All over America, people are proving that you don’t have to be rich to build wealth. Currently there are more than 90,000 people enrolled in America Saves. As members of America Saves, they are paying off their debts and saving to reach their financial goals.
America Saves Week, February 24 March 2, 2008, is a new and expanded effort to reach institutions and individuals to increase awareness on the need to save money, reduce debt and build wealth. The primary focus is on Financial Action commitments to save, invest and build wealth. To enroll as a saver go to www.americasaves.org and click on “enroll today”.
